A Holistic Approach to Stress and Anxiety

Posted by Sue Serre on

The mind and body are interconnected. Every thought and feeling we have can both alter and is altered by the chemistry of our bodies. Genetics, individual body chemistry, sensory input and our mind frame all come together to determine how successfully we manage stress in our lives.

We cannot change our genetics, but we can alter gene expression by changing the environment in which our cells ‘bathe’. We can do this by ensuring we have adequate nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, essential fats, and amino acids. It is just as important to limit ‘anti-nutrients’ like alcohol, sugar, drugs, chemicals and toxins. Anti-nutrients can displace or destroy the key nutrients listed above that are necessary for mental health.

Sense Input is what we hear, smell, see and touch. Sensory overload can impact our ability to cope effectively. Imagine the repeated sensory assault of excessive, unpleasant noise mingled with offensive odors, mixed with flickering lights, in a cluttered, crowded space with people bumping into you. Realistically, that may not happen all at once, but any number of ‘sensual assaults’ occurring regularly can impede our ability to cope effectively. Some of these we can change, some we can’t.

Our Mind Frame determines how we interpret what is happening in our lives. Early childhood conditioning, learned attitudes, what we believe about ourselves and the world, all make up our mind frame. Our perception creates our reality.

Imagine how you would feel if you could reduce some of the regular assaults on your senses and incorporate soothing sights, sounds and smells. What if you replaced some negative self-talk with positive affirmations? What if you started taking supplements and making healthier food choices?

It is the interplay between our genetics, body chemistry, sense input and mind frame that determines our ability to cope with what is happening in our lives at any given time.
