April is cancer awareness month marked by the familiar sight of yellow daffodils so I thought it would be appropriate to write an article about cancer. I’ve seen many articles about how to prevent cancer and the many causes of cancer, but what about when you have cancer? This topic, this April is particularly timely as my husband is undergoing radiation and chemotherapy treatment for esophagus cancer. (He has since passed away September 2019).
The following represents some of my findings since he and I began this journey and it is for information purposes only. The choices one makes for treatment, supplementation and self care are very individual – some follow the medical doctor’s direction to the letter and some take a completely alternative approach and some do a bit of both. I just wanted to make others aware of some products that they may not know about, but which they might find helpful during treatment if they choose.
The first product I found (and now carry at the Hollow Willow) is a high calorie, organic, plant-based weight gain drink mix called Iron Vegan Athlete’s Gainer. This product provides a clean source of calories which is perfect for anyone trying to gain weight or for those who are restricted from solid foods. Simply add a liquid multi-vitamin and some omega 3 fish oil and you’ve got a complete meal replacement that is a powerhouse of nutrition. The prepared meal replacements I saw on store shelves all contained corn syrup and sugar (which feed cancer), corn, canola and soy (most likely genetically modified) - in which case they have been exposed to glyphosate (the active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup) which is a potent endocrine disruptor and has been shown to cause cancer.
The second product is Just Juice organic blueberry juice. There is some research that suggests that blueberries have compounds (resveratrol and flavonoids) that make cancer cells more responsive to radiation, increasing the efficacy of radiation to 70% from 20% by itself.
The third product is Intestinew which helps to protect and heal the lining of the gastrointestinal tract that can be damaged by chemotherapy drugs resulting in further complications in the future. The forth product is Turkey Tail mushroom. Often times a patient’s white blood cell count becomes low and treatment has to be delayed. Like many medicinal mushrooms, Turkey Tail has immune-boosting, antioxidant and anti-tumour effects. It is approved in China and Japan for cancer patients as an adjunct to chemotherapy and/or radiation.
There are many other natural products that can help during the cancer treatment process, but space here is limited so I’ve just included a few of the key products my husband is using now to support his treatment over the next six weeks. Please come in to the Hollow Willow Health Store if you would like to discuss your journey back to health with me.
