Alpha-Lipoic Acid is known as "the universal antioxidant" because it protects both the fat and water-based areas of the body from oxidative damage. This includes protecting DNA in the mitochondria - the energy-producing powerhouse of cells within muscles, nerves and tissues throughout the body. It is this type of damage that results in "aging".
ALA enhances antioxidant status by recycling vitamins C and E and by increasing levels of glutathione which can become depleted in people with high oxidative stress due to inflammation or blood sugar and cardiovascular disorders.
